190. Bounce Back by Misako Rocks! (2021) - sports comic about a girl moving from Japan to NYC using basketball to find her place. Manga-inspired illustrations w magic cat. Mean girls change of heart seems too easy. Would have liked more daily struggles of moving to a new country.
I am only three pages in and this might be the best manga ever written.
Cover of Yagi the Bookshop Goat by Fumi Furukawa
183. Frizzy by Claribel Ortega & Rose Bousamra (2022) - adorable cotton-candy colored story about acceptance & body image. Young girl wants to embrace her hair while mom thinks it's too unruly. Cool aunt swoops in to save the day! Filling in a hole in MG comics and it's v fun.
181. Supergirl: Being Super by Mariko Tamaki & Joelle Jones (2018) - origin story involving grief and confusion. Kara isn't too naive or bubbly. Tamaki is great at creating well-rounded teen characters and Jones's art is nuanced and full of life.
175. Better Place by Shawn Daley & Duane Murray (2021) - a kick in the stomach. Young boy told his grandfather is in the "better place" so he goes to find him. A different type of grieving story within an adventure journey that is devastating.
174. Our Work Is Everywhere: An Illustrated Oral History of Queer & Trans Resistance by Syan Rose (2021) - so hard to read. Literally, the font used for text was often IMPOSSIBLE TO READ in the digital book. Unfortunate bc the content is important and inspiring. Crossed my eyes.
168. Home v1 by Julio Anta & Lisa Sterle (2021) - immigrant boy discovers superpowers after being separated from his mom at US border. New take on kid hero origin story, tons of social commentary w/o losing any of the fun. Emotional. Hope there's much more.
This is the only appropriate response to Captain Boomerang.
From Midnight: The Complete Collection
158. Marshmallow & Jordan by Alina Chau (2021) - re-read for book club. Still a complete delight hitting important topics through an adorable elephant and girl relationship. Gorgeous watercolor artwork really captures an Indonesian locale. Positive wheelchair user representation.
153. The Aquanaut by Dan Santat (2022) - diving suit piloted by sea life help an orphan and her uncle reconnect after her dad dies in a boating accident. Somehow cheerful and depressing. Lively and bright illustrations. Hopeful ending helps w the dark topics.
