i have no idea how i would go about doing it for tiling materials and not uniquely-baked assets tho. but i've seen some great painterly textures done purely in substance designer, so i'll have to learn that. really exciting stuff

also need to try this style in assets other than pots (anything that's not already hand painted in reality) like rocks, terrain, garments, skin etc. i feel like it should hold up

i need to do lots more experimentations but mainly i think i should push the colors further with more hue shifts (without much saturation) and try to have more brush strokes rather than smudges/splatters all around

another idea is to not simplify everything, keep some mid and small level details, which we rarely see in stylized enviro art. some games i think did a great job at a similar style is dishonored, disco elysium, maybe vane. but i feel like there is huge potential to explore still.

that's kind of an impossible bar to reach but still fun to aim for. i like where classical academic tradition meets impressionism, feels like a sweet spot of realism and stylization.

both are nice but i wanted to see what would come out of other references/inspirations. for rhythma, i want to try to keep a naturalistic/realistic look throughout, but also want to play around and experiment with colors, kind of like how sargent and sorolla would paint

first 3d assets for the game, i did these to test out the style i wanted to go for the whole thing. the idea was roughly "impressionistic-painterly-naturalistic-handpainted" look, with lots of hue shifts, visible brush strokes but also desaturated and natural colors.
