All this isn't a defense of on-model animation, however. But the way we can think about this is: until how far do character designs stay on-model when put under certain kinds of animation?
A good example for this is Kondô's famous sequence in Conan ep 2

Très joli film, je ne me remets pas de la sublime direction artistique. Néanmoins je me demande si l'esthétique très "superflat" et minimaliste ne joue pas un peu contre l'animation..
