In theory anyone with a Switch will be able to experience classic PC JRPGs like 夢幻の心臓II, The Screamer, Brandish, Warning, Xanadu, etc...

However, Project EGG is Japan-only, and most these games were never translated... high chance this will also be Japan-only :/

Had a great talk yesterday with the folks at the , one of the topics we touched was on how distorted our image of RPG history is.

How many today know that these screenshots are from one of the most expensive & hyped RPGs of the 90s, that sold 3x more than Fallout 1?

Before continuing to the 90s, a side-note: by the mid 80s, Europe begins making RPGs too, mainly Ultima & Dungeon Master clones in Germany & Eastern Europe.

France, however, did their own thing. Mixing comics, manga & cinema influences, they had a unique & short-lived RPG scene:

Japanese games, on the other hand, were taking inspiration from anime & manga to deliver more complex stories, with interesting settings, fun characters and plot twists.

And the Japanese PCs & consoles could render amazing scenes. These are all JRPGs from the 80s:

The story goes that in 1986 Japanese devs combined Wizardry + Ultima to make Dragon Quest and "create JRPGs".

But they had been making Japanese RPGs since 1982 - some inspired by Western RPGs, others entirely novel, pioneering ideas like mini-maps, Action-RPGs & tactical combat!

Fun to see the RPG Maker titles of other countries... Vietnam made a horror game called "Lạng Sơn 1978", set right after the end of the Vietnam War:

Since this is becoming a thread, 雨血之死镇 / Rainblood:Town of Death is AFAIK the only one available in English. It was an indie hit, getting over 500k downloads, sequels and a spin-off series called Phantom Blade. You can get its prequel "Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage" on Steam

Seems like RPG Maker left a mark even in China - in 2008 an indie game called "Rainblood: Town of Death" was made in RPG Maker XP. It was a hit and got an English release in 2010: https://t.co/PHkzJTN3Ux
Then it got a 2011 sequel & a 2013 prequel on Steam: https://t.co/r3a7j8Av5z
