No '80s baby means no '90s Val Von Doom. This is a waste of both the '90s as a decade in comics and of Reed and Doom's homoerotic lab partner tensions.

You're going to have Reed and Sue separated in the '80s? You're not going to have them bone in the Negative Zone and make a baby with an incredibly confusing origin story? Doom's little princess?

I was going to comment on Johnny's cute outfit on this page to try and get myself out of the rage and into the reading groove but then I actually read the word bubbles and in light of the Ben thing, not feeling great about labeling Victor "crown prince" and erasing HIS backstory.

Kaine ALMOST kills Louise at this point, but I think it's important to note that he doesn't. He's still "in love" with her, or with his image of her, or with the affection she showed him, and so he can't do it. He collapses weeping and lets her walk out.

I think it's crucial that Kaine isn't depicted as outright cruel in this period of time. He has a sense of justice just like Peter and Ben, it's just warped by his own suffering and his abuse at the hands of the Jackal.

🥉 Fantastic Four (1998) #11-12
Okay I'll be real this would've placed second if it wasn't like 5 pages. Claremont masterfully reworks the FF's transformation for drama in a version where Johnny's first act as the Human Torch was to absorb the heat of the crash -- and explode.

🥈Mythos: Fantastic Four
What this loses in points for not going with the rocket ship theft, it makes up for in unbelievably beautiful art by Paolo Rivera. Fun, heartfelt, and sweet with a gorgeous "reasoning behind the powers" page. My top pick for a more modern origin story.
