But as a #Hohenzollern he had an heir: Elector Johannes Sigismund of #Brandenburg (a Hohenzollern, too). Brandeburg & Preußen became one entity. 1701 Elector Friedrich Wihelm III had himself crowned King in Prussia (not "of" as #Poland was still in charge). The rest is history
"#Berlin Houses in the Snow", an 1847 painting by Adolph von #Menzel, brilliant 19thC GER painter most famous for his historical works. This picture is most likely the view from Menzel's own flat at the time. He lived in Ritterstr. 43 in today's #Berlin-#Kreuzberg.

These two paintings are for me the essence of the 1920s: the 1926 portrait of Dr Meyer-Hermann and the 1927 painting "Match Seller II". Both by #OttoDix whose birthday it is today (see last tweets).

#Friedrich II the Great, 1782.

Happy Birthday, #Berlin-#Karlshorst! Known as the "#Dahlem of the East", this elegant residential district was est. #OTD 1895. It owes its shape to Oscar #Gregovorius (actually Grzegorzewski , Polish nobility), master builder & urban planner.
#OTD 1958 old wooden #Müggelturm, a popular restaurant & viewing tower on top of the Kleiner Müggelberg in #Berlin #Köpenick went up in flames & burnt down. Op. 1890 #Müggelturm survived #WW2 after owner cut off wires to prevent its being blown up by Germans in 1945.
