WIP: Wow this little puffin was a struggle today. I decided that the gesso board was too slippy (another think I'm going to have to overcome and work out), so I tried a rough texture gesso in red (one I had painted on). Everytime you put down paint, it soaks it up and goes dark

Work in progress - oil

What I want to portray is the hares ear. At the moment I can see areas which are 'weak' and I'm going to wait for the painting dry before attempting another layer of oil or glaze.

I got too hot and bothered in the shed, so hopefully tomorrow cooler

Work in Progress: The drawing gives me the 'plan' and allows me now to start my painting......... next 'session' is to feel my way to understand colours/temperatures/values of the King penguin .......

I think I've finished the hummingbird. I can't work any more layers in oil, as you find it 'skids' across the surface & you disturb layers below. Yet another painting to rest & I'll see if I need to add more.

My palette is so bright - (I don't use black, as I can mix that up)

This is where I am at today ...

There are positives and negatives in this painting at the moment such as: can I go any higher in key/how do I create more form in the opening wing/'knocking' back the distant wing - I do like the mark making 😀- tomorrow is another day lol!

Work in progress - hitting the high notes now, but still trying to control the tonal balance. This is where the painting becomes 'ugly' and it's now fight or flight (excuse the pun lol!).

I'll tweet where I've ended up today - but still not happy! may end up overworking it 😟

One thing I love about painting is the mark making - the brush strokes applied to the surface of the canvas.

I've taken some close ups so you can see all the layers involved to create form/depth in the subject.

I kept the puffin in flat shapes, with no detail, & added a background. It didn't work as the background didn't register correctly & the poor puffin looked stuck on. This is what I call the ugly stage of a painting and you have to persist and rub the painting down and keep going

I'm stopping the painting of the owl and will have a ponder. I need to revisit the feet and probably varnish to bring back the 'colours' and the subtle contrasts.

Acrylic on board

This is Work in Progress - first pass today and will rework over the next week. Oil on board.

I need to look at the passages and try to understand the link between the birds and to refine area's. Will see what happens.
