Doodle of the Day: Man with Opera Hat (1912), Black fabricated chalk on laid paper, Juan Gris (1887-1927). This is a study for the painting ‘Man in the Café’ from 1912. The drawing uses a Cubist technique to build up the different facets and planes around the head and face.

Doodle of the Day: Study for Crivelli's Garden (1990), Pen, ink and watercolour on paper, Paula Rego (1935 – 2022). Paula Rego was inspired in this study by a 15th-century Italian altarpiece by Carlo Crivelli, (c. 1430 - 1495) to produce an exploration of women from the bible.

Doodle of the Day: Portrait of Otto Klemperer (1923), Lithograph on paper, Otto Dix (1891 – 1969). Dix created this portrait of the conductor Otto Klemperer (1885 - 1979) in a less harsh manner than his usual style. It uses strong line work to define the contours of the head.

Doodle of the Day: Artist's Hands Holding Bone (1981), Charcoal and black ballpoint pen on paper, Henry Moore (1898-1986). Moore created this drawing from ‘point of view’. It uses crosshatching to define the form of the hands. The use of charcoal helps bring the hands forward.

Doodle of the Day: Portrait de femme (1912), Gouache over pencil on paper, Constantin Brancusi (1876–1957). Constantin Brancusi was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th-century. This work is simply drawn with strong use of background colour to bring the figure forward.

Doodle of the Day: Loïe Fuller (1893), Watercolour on paper, Auguste Rodin (1840–1917). Loïe Fuller was an American dancer and pioneer of modern dance technique. Rodin produced a drawing that gives a sense of movement to the figure through the use of simple mark making.

Doodle of the Day: Têtes' (recto) (1947), Pencil on paper, Alberto Giacometti (1901 - 1966). Giacometti produced numerous drawings throughout his life. This drawing was one of a number recently discovered. It is drawn in his distinctive loose, scribbled style.
