This resulted in perhaps the most distinctive piece I've ever made and far and away one of the most popular. I still chase the frame of mind I was in while working on it, but that sense of carefree liberation is hard to achieve.
Nothing about it was sacred, so I felt free to mess with it as much as I pleased, doubtful that it would ever even see the light of day. I ended up making some bold choices with this piece of a kind that I haven't made since.
I find myself continually coming back to Waters of Creation. It was a breakthrough piece for me at the time, and in many ways still is. I returned to it after having abandoned it in frustration for several months, completely indifferent to how it might turn out.
In celebration of the success of the Kickstarter campaign so far, I've decided to offer prints of my most recent piece, Darkspire, as one of the reward choices! The campaign is still running for another thirteen days, so check it out!

I'll probably always be a pretty detail-oriented painter--I like realism, and I like paintings that reward a close inspection--but I'm finding myself hewing closer to the level of expressiveness I admire in many of my favorite artists' work.
As I've become more confident, I'm finding myself willing to leave areas of paintings looser and less detailed, and am paying more attention to how I use edges. This has reduced the time needed to complete a piece and brought me closer to the overall appearance I am seeking.
