Matt is drowning in his despair. Thanks for that visual representation, Toei Animation.
Gabumon: Sure, you have some teenage angst, but you've been a great brother to T.K.
Running through the forest and leaping into the sky... Now where have I seen that before?
Those kind words are more than enough to make the Crest of Friendship glow. I have to remember that this is still part of Cherrymon's scheme to make the kids kill each other, despite some truth in there.
No matter what Matt decides, Gabumon will always be there for him and will even fight for him, because that's what a friend would do.
Something I often bring up is that the Digimon partners always are devoted to their human partners. It's probably how they were "coded," so it's fine, though when they speak for themselves, it's just a good moment for them to shine.
After the lake bait, all Cherrymon needs now is to persuade Matt with his words. Matt is falling to the Dark Side of the Force.
Looks like a different art team was animating Matt's scenes because the characters are drawn differently from how they look in other scenes. I don't think this is ever explained, but this must be Cherrymon's "Illusion Mist."
Matt languishes because he believes everyone's grown and he hasn't. He convinces himself he has to go his own path to change.
