16 May 1916. 48 victory ace Captain Alan Machin Wilkinson of 24 Squadron RFC in an Airco DH2 ‘Pusher’ on patrol over Somme Valley. On that date he achieved his first two victories, an AGO G.II at 07:00 and a Fokker E at 07:30. Both at Péronne.

17 November 1970. 03.47.00 UTC/GMT. The Soviet probe Lunokhod 1, first of two unmanned lunar rovers, touched down on the moon's surface. Although designed for a lifetime of three months, it operated 321 Earth days and traversed 6.5 miles.

17 November 1946. The Lancastrian’s two Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 piston engines were shut down, except for take-off and landing and their propellers feathered to reduce drag. It was the first jet-powered passenger transport to fly from one country to another.

24 October 1953. First flight of the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger (model 8-80) 52-7994 at Edwards Air Force Base. Flown by test pilot Dick Johnson. American interceptor jet aircraft. After just six flights, the aeroplane was lost due to a takeoff engine fire.

22 October 1797. First use of a silk parachute was made by Frenchman André-Jacques Garnerin (31 January 1769 - 18 August 1823) at Parc Monceau, Paris. He jumped from a hydrogen balloon at a height of approximately 3,000 feet.
