Then there's another layer, the mesh is displaced out a little and a separate distortion shader (this one) is put on top. The distortion is "projected" out from an empty sitting off to the left, so it matches the cone shape of the trail.

I'm still on level generation at the moment, but I think this is the final pass on the distortion algorithm I'm working on that takes a player's settlement and makes it suitably dangerous for roguelike exploration. With tiles by @CuddlyClover :D
