One of these days I’ll start doing prep research and using proper anatomy refs like a good palaeoartist, but for now I’m really enjoying recklessly smashing out Thylacoleo sketches with no theoretical basis other than “big boofy head, buck teeth, highly pattable” #FossilFriday
For #FossilFriday, here’s Barbara Jones’ ‘Life-size models of Jurrasic reptiles in the grounds of the Crystal Palace, Sydenham’ (1942). Part of the Recording Britain series, the painting is just one of many that was designed to foster a sense of national unity in wartime. #fossil
#FossilFriday #PANDAS #FalseThumb Articulated manus of Indarctos arctoides from Batallones-3 fossil site. First diet related false thumb from the fossil record. https://t.co/MRfzmygJTs
I've just finished a couple more #palaeobotanical illustrations; an #Araucariostrobus (bar 10mm) and an #Araucaria (bar 20mm). These are based on cone specimens presented in Kunzmann et al, 2004, from the Crato Formation.

For #FossilFriday, me and Eric Snively of @OSUVertPaleo performed an FEA test run on the crania of the long-shouted #tyrannosaur, #Qianzhousaurus. The skeletal drawing was based on the artwork by @AshleyPalaeo.
The Amud 1 skull was one of the first that I chose when I started drawing fossils more than 25 years ago. Today this ancient individual is more scientifically interesting than ever, at an ancient epicenter of population mixture. #FossilFriday #hominin #paleoanthropology

Let sleeping Gorgonops lie (unless you wanna get chomped). I’ve been meaning to draw more of these Permian therapsids and today seemed like a good a time as any. #FossilFriday
After hearing about the new cretaceous compsognathid on the block I immediately had to doodle it.
Ubirajara jubatus sports some pretty weird filaments, probably for display.
Tried to somewhat evoke the style of old bird illustrations.

#FossilFriday The Holotype of Hyolithes baconi from the Ordovician Trenton Fm. in Rock County, WI. Hyolitha is a particularly enigmatic group, but was recently classified as a lophophorate, making it closely related to brachiopods. Type Collection @ucmpberkeley
Anomolacarids are now called radiodonts, but Anomolacaris is still among the largest ones we know. The Apex predator of his day would be little more than a kitten in the oceans of today ... little more than a snack.

A #sea #urchin from the #Jurassic seas, found at Curtis's Pit, Radley. Only the hard shell of the body has fossilised, the spines have been lost. #FossilFriday #museumadvent #abingdon #oxfordshire #fossils #OxonCulture
