It was James Fergusson, a Scottish architectural historian, who led a campaign to save the priceless murals of Ajanta. Fergusson brought the vandalism to the attention of the East India Company, and they appointed Major Robert Gill to make copies of the cave art. 4/8

In 1906, the Herringhams made a trip to India. She travelled to India again in 1911, and copied Buddhist cave #painting at Ajanta near Hyderabad, which had deteriorated.

few more mural in #Ajanta caves paintings done might be with natural pigments. colours are still very vibrant. ASI people have done meticulous job to restore many such paintings. splendid depiction of Flora and fauna done by artists of that time
at various level on walls and ceiling are painted with various aaratives. but in places of mediation-prayers-study-learning etc why such paintings were done? monastery they were? symbolism? teachings reminding through symbols
as done through pictorial books?
