W E Crowther, former stationmaster at died in June 1918, 17yrs after losing both legs at work when run over by a train. He missed out on recuperating at the Railwaymen’s Convalescent Home in opened in 1915. Thorpe Hall apartments since 2003.

After an absence of 30+yrs the annual party started up again in 1929 to raise cash for cottage hospital. Supported by local businesses eg it petered out in 1937.
