THREAD: The Flightless Auks of the Pacific

1/7: The great auk is the only flightless bird in the North Atlantic, and its Latin name, Pinguinus, alludes to their iconic ecology. However, unbeknownst to most, there is a second line of extinct grounded auks called Mancallinae.

There are ~150k historic images of nature available from the Biodiversity Heritage Library covering the centuries. A look through their Flickr page is well worth it (https://t.co/967dBvRe6w). These odd Auks are from The Birds of Great Britain, v7, 1795-1801.
