A monster from the Scottish isles - about fifty miles from where I grew up.

The Nuckelavee of Orcadian legend is part horse, part humanoid - its breath wilts crops and it was blamed for droughts and epidemics.

The Sea Mither is an Orcadian summer spirit that fights an eternal war for control of the seas against her nemesis, Teran, a powerful winter spirit!

It's during the summer months she is at the height of her powers & can warm the sea & calm the wind...

The Nuckelavee from Orcadian folklore is a fave for me - a skinless horse, human hybrid demon that comes from the sea and breathes plague, drought and death on land...💀

The stoor worm, or Mester Stoor Worm, was a gigantic evil sea serpent of Orcadian folklore, capable of contaminating plants and destroying animals and humans with its putrid breath. It is probably an Orkney variant of the Norse Jörmungandr!

Creatures of Nuckelavee (Orcadian)
A demon the guise of a twisted combination of man and horse. Its breath wilts anything nearby and its very being spreads plague. Hostile and malevolent, there aren't many ways to control it, especially when it returns to the sea.

I'm still really liking this creature design I came up with. It's based off the Nuckelavee from Orcadian mythology and the cordyceps fungus. I named it "Nuckelhed"

I was happy with the concept and lore of Nuckelhed, but not of the initial drawing. So, here's a do-over. This is Nuckelhed, a creature based off of the cordyceps fungus and the Nuckelavee from Orcadian mythology! I hope you enjoy!

The Stoorwyrm was a giant sea serpent in Orcadian folklore. In legend it was slain by Assipattle, a young farm boy who, when swallowed by it, plunged burning peat into its liver. It’s death throws turned the sky black and caused great earthquakes.

Nuckelavee- Orcadian

A skinless demon resembling a man on a horse, this beast marches from the ocean depths and releases a stench from its jowls so fowl, the crops wilt and the livestock drops dead. Have you heard of this creature?

The Nuckelavee or "devil of the sea" was a terrifying Orcadian sea creature, part horse, part man with no skin, and black blood. Its breath could cause droughts, spoil crops or bring about a plague. The only way to escape its wrath was to step into fresh water.

And of course there is an artistic version of this one too, which has an orange sea because of course it does. It's the northern-most Orcadian lighthouse and was painted with bands for daytime visibility in 1899.

The second woman in the Taibhsear's tale is counted out to another Orcadian rhyme:
Eesy ozie eggers Anne
Popsie vinegar I began
Teet tot moose fat
Catariddle bum fiddle,
I choice thee second oot.

As a child my mother took me to the cinema to see The Secret of Roan Inish, the first time I saw a movie before reading the book, about the Irish and Orcadian of selkies. I often think it was that fantastical film that begot my love of folklore.
