I know I’m about 25 years late to the party but I started watching Hideaki Anno’s NEON GENESIS EVANGELION and oh my gosh is it good! I don’t know quite what I was expecting but it flies straight out the gate with 3 incredible episodes and I’m hooked

Narratively not what I was expecting at all but in terms of poetic intelligence and idiosyncratic brilliance this is right up with his best! It predates LOVE EXPOSURE by 3 years yet structurally and characteristically this is astonishingly similar. I’m so glad I found it ☺️

Time to start watching the TOMIE films! It’s going to be interesting going into these having just consumed the entire Manga first. I hope the films are as diverse as Junji Ito’s vision because there are so many interesting ideas to pick & choose from! https://t.co/FcSiw0x1ss

I just finished reading THE PLOTTERS by Un-Su Kim and absolutely loved it! It’s a kind of bizarre mix of JOHN WICK style underground assassin craziness with the darkly existential characters and situations of Park Chan-wook’s VENGEANCE TRILOGY. A thorough recommend!

I just listened to Roger Deakins’ cinematography podcast with special guest Bill Pope on my run this morning! It’s so fascinating to hear these two legends talking shop about some of my favourite films growing up! I feel like a bunch of awesome rewatches are in order now!

Michael Arias’ TEKKONKINKREET. I’m super excited for this one. Everyone I know who has seen it says it’s amazing. Apparently the manga it is based on is utterly phenomenal. It looks cool, it sounds cool, it’s basically going to fucking rock!

Mamoru Oshii’s GHOST IN THE SHELL. Probably one of the most well know animes of all time. It’s one I watched countless times whilst growing up but after hearing Elon Musk talk about Neuralink symbiosis recently I need to revisit it!

Hayao Miyazaki’s LAPUTA: CASTLE IN THE SKY. This is one of only a few of Miyazaki’s films I haven’t seen yet and it was the first film that Studio Ghibli released when first founded back in 1985. It’s so good to be able watch it on Netflix now!

Satoshi Kon’s PAPRIKA. I remember when this film first came out and it completely melted my brain! So many overwhelming & clever ideas, so much provocative & bizarre imagery, and so many memorable moments. It’s an incredible achievement in cinema!
