Well goddamn!!! The narrative is just as deranged but the leap in production quality here is astounding! I can only imagine what Ujicha will be able to achieve with his next one. It is teased on this disc it but gives absolutely nothing away! I’m a big fan of this gekimation now!

#NowWatching Ujicha’s THE BURNING BUDDHA MAN. This utterly demented looking fantasy horror was made using a style of animation known as ‘geki-mation’ where hand-drawn cutouts act like marionettes & then Ujicha adds diegetic music & practical effects on top! So damn cool #anime

On January 11th I became a father and on December 11th I found out my mother’s cancer had spread to her lungs and bones. In between that there was Covid-19 & the never ending quarantine! Times have been incredibly tough in 2020 but my year in film has been my favourite year yet!

Tsukamoto is such a unique artist but he has a visual style that I’ve found very recognisable so far except for his latest film KILLING and now this! He sure makes an amazing period picture! What a legend!

Really nice production design and cinematography but so incredibly melodramatic. It felt like a soap opera at times! Anyone else seen this one?
