I’m generally not a fan of western directors tackling eastern stories, and in fact Pesce’s next film GRUDGE was absolutely dire in my opinion, but he really understood this story and he brought something new to the table that really worked here. It’s a nasty but sweet film treat!

There are moments of real humour, but at the end of the day this is more of a drama than a satire. Jingwen is great in the lead role but Chow is sorely missed, and whilst the budget has clearly sky rocketed since the last film it doesn’t have the edge that the 2009 original did.

I just finished Season 1 of JUJUTSU KAISEN and fucking loved it! It doesn’t break the mould of the greats that came before it but it does everything so well! A perfect blend of horror & humour with great characters & an absolutely epic art style! It rocks 😅

I love that Stephen Chow’s character is called Stephen Chow & yet he isn’t playing himself. This seems like the strangest choice but it works. The film is a perfect mix of slapstick comedy, irreverent musicality and over-the-top silliness. It’s impossible not to have fun with it!

When this came out in 2016 it was the highest-grossing movie of all time in China! Apparently the US box office was only around $3mil but it made $550mil internationally overall! Those are bonkers numbers & this is a bonkers film. Well worth checking out if you’re a fan of Chow!

I’m not quite sure what the hell I just watched but it was definitely interesting. At times it felt like a YA twilight zone spin-off but there were moments of pretty gnarly horror and some completely random stuff like an impromptu comedy rendition of David Bowie’s Space Oddity 🤪

The art style is classic Hosoda. The cg animation is really stunningly crafted! The soundtrack and score are gorgeous. The whole READY PLAYER ONE meets BEAUTY AND THE BEAST by way of PAPRIKA thing works well too. It’s all really well done, I think SUMMER WARS did it better though

If you’re a fan of the original then I can’t in good faith recommend this as a worthy update, but if you’re a fan of Japanese or Korean dramas then I think you’ll probably get a lot more out of it. It’s got a great cast & lots of melodramatic character building stuff to enjoy 😅

Don Hall & Carlos López Estrada’s RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON. My little girl is still poorly and we have now watched TURNING RED five times in a row so I thought I’d mix things up a bit. We last watched this exactly one year ago and I remember enjoying it. Any fans? https://t.co/1TFFpmTecx

There’s another totally random but absolutely awesome Madhouse anime segment that showcases Ishii’s love of the art form whilst also allowing him to put Hideaki Anno in front of the screen again. It’s really cool to see filmmakers working together to champion stuff like this!
