Peter Cushing was born OTD in 1913. The actor, noted for playing Baron Frankenstein and Doctor Van Helsing for Hammer Studios, and Grand Moff Tarkin in STAR WARS, inspired David Michelinie and Bob Layton to create Iron Man foe Justin Hammer. He died in 1994.
5/24/73: If you're a @WalterSimonson fan - and every comics buff should be - you'll want THE TWILIGHT ZONE #50, as it contains one of Walt's first professional sales. A wealthy man uses cryogenics to extend his life, but all never goes according to plan...in the Twilight Zone...
THE MAD MAGICIAN opened OTD in 1954, one of the first films banking on Vincent Price's new box office success as a horror star. As a master of illusion who goes to grisly lengths to protect his secrets, this is an interesting watch for fans of THE PRESTIGE and THE ILLUSIONIST.
Happy 76th birthday to the incredible Ken Kelly! One of Warren's most prolific cover artists of the 70s (this is the original art for CREEPY #85), he's also painted numerous LP jackets for rock acts like KISS and Manowar. And he's the nephew of Frazetta's late wife Ellie. Cheers!
5/17/73: UNEXPECTED #149 is an excellent example of how legendary artist Nick Cardy liked to draw covers for DC's horror comics that featured canines (although sometimes they were deceased). Also with a story written by the ever-present George Kashdan, whose was born OTD.
Happy 54th birthday, SILVER SURFER #1. He made numerous appearances since his 1966 debut, but could he hold his own title? Yes, but for only 18 issues this time. Against soaring John Buscema vistas, Stan waxed eloquent on the follies of humanity. Even my brother bought a copy.
5/10/77: STAR WARS fans who knew enough to be on top of the Marvel's adaptation were already well aware of one-third of the story before the movie ever opened. It would take 6 parts, and eventually the series would wind up in the hands of the astonishing Goodwin/Infantino.
