1/13/76: DOCTOR STRANGE #13 begins with the total destruction of Earth - really - and only grows wilder from there. Comics do not come drawn upon more sweeping canvases; Englehart/Colan could never be accused of thinking small. A mind-blowing head trip, and a favorite splash.

George Alec Effinger was born OTD in 1947. The future Nebula and Hugo Award-winning author wrote for Marvel early in his career, penning horror stories and the characters Gullivar Jones and Thongor. He grappled with health issues most of his life and died far too soon at age 55.

12/31/70: Shame we don't know for certain who painted the cover of RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT #24 - George Wilson? - but it's wonderfully moody. The story (Luis Dominguez art) is of a phantom dancing girl who lures men to a pool, only to dive beneath the waters and strangle them.

Drawn by the legendary Jack Davis, the Sesame Street gang decorate for Christmas.

12/19/78: Shellhead & Subby slug it out in IRON MAN #120, giving David Michelinie - former AQUAMAN scribe - his shot at Namor. When Marvel hired him, he was assigned a Sub-Mariner revival, even going so far as to plot the debut, but these were lean times & Marvel pulled the plug.
