Vaughan Bodē was born OTD in 1941. The underground artist was noted for his creation Cheech Wizard, and Marvel & Warren would showcase his work; this is from the 1973 debut of CRAZY magazine. A groundbreaker in gender fluidity, Bodē died of autoerotic asphyxiation at only 33.
@DrPopCultureBG Had the 1970 Gold Key reprint of the one on the left.
7/20/76:
"Hear me, X-Men! No longer am I the woman you once knew! I am fire! And life incarnate! Now and forever -- I am PHOENIX!"
X-MEN #101. 46 years ago today.
'Nuff said.
7/17/73: Man-Thing goodness on the magazine rack as MONSTERS UNLEASHED #3 sports a cover that was a Neal Adams favorite (he liked drawing ladies with ripped blouses, and the monster is intentionally non-threatening). The Man-Thing tale is a reprint, but there are 3 new stories.
One of our funniest science fiction writers, Robert Sheckley was born OTD in 1928. More famous for his wry, unpredictable short stories, his work was the basis for the movies THE 10th VICTIM and FREEJACK. Was also briefly the editor of OMNI magazine. Sheckley died in 2005.
Nine years ago today I was getting ready to see the first matinee.
Happy 80th birthday to that Master of Inks, Tom Palmer! He started as an illustrator, but soon discovered he delivered unbelievable finishes to Gene Colan, Neal Adams, John Buscema and more. How lucky were you to get him to complete your pencils? Hope he has a terrific day!
Happy 82nd birthday to Mike "Love That Last Name" Ploog! One of our finest illustrators, he rendered historically great work on MAN-THING, WEREWOLF, FRANKENSTEIN, KULL, and then went Hollywood & did designs for THE THING, DARK CRYSTAL, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS & more. None better!
