My Favourite C64 Brain Games No.5
Defender of the Crown
Cinemaware
1987
Cinemaware’s debut is an absolute corker. Fantastic presentation, at the time, probably the greatest graphics seen on the C64 and a perfect balance of action and strategy. A superior piece of software.
@looksunfamiliar This. It's hard to decide what's creepier, the cover or the song.
My Favourite C64 Brain Games No.9
Head Over Heels
Ocean
1987
It may look like yet another Knightlore clone, but Head Over Heels is so much more. Lots of lovely amusing touches, brilliantly designed puzzles and ultra-addictive gameplay make this an incredibly absorbing game.
My Favourite C64 Brain Games No.10
Killed Until Dead
Accolade
1986
Few publishers released games as polished as Accolade did, and this is no exception. A brilliant murder mystery with excellent graphics, bags of humour and engrossing gameplay, it’s fantastic fun.
My Favourite C64 Brain Games No.13
Pipe Mania
Empire
1989
One of the last games I played on the C64 (I switched to the Amiga in '89) Pipe Mania is simple but maddeningly addictive. Like lots of puzzlers, graphics and sound aren’t flash, but the playability is off the scale.
Impossible Mission 3 is looking pretty good

30 years ago, the old breadbin was well into its twilight years. By 1992 most software houses had dropped support for 8-bit systems, but a few kept going and Feb 92 saw some quality games released including Creatures 2, The Blues Brothers, First Samurai and Winter Camp.
My Fave C64 Tie-in Games No.2
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Ocean
1985
Denton Designs’ original, absorbing & utterly brilliant FGTH game consists of a series of quirky sub-games (based around themes from the band’s songs) tied together via a murder mystery. Unique & outstanding.
My Favourite C64 Tie-in Games No.3
Dan Dare
Virgin
1986
A fantastic arcade adventure with great cartoon strip-like graphics, brilliant puzzles, plenty of innovative and amusing touches, a brilliant laser mini-game and super-addictive gameplay. One of my absolute favourites.
My Favourite C64 Tie-in Games No.5
The Great Escape
Ocean
1986
Although not an official licence, The Great Escape is clearly inspired by the classic World War 2 film. Innovative and atmospheric, and with tense and utterly absorbing gameplay, it’s an absolutely superb game.
