My favourite games of 1989 – No.13

Battle Squadron

Beautiful background graphics, a brilliant simultaneous two-player mode (racing each other for the power-ups is great fun), and instantly gripping arcade shoot ‘em up gameplay make Battle Squadron a top-class, quality shooter.

Hybris

A superb shooter that wouldn’t have looked out of place in an 80s arcade. Nice presentation (you can change the game’s parameters), a cool electro-rock soundtrack & a perfectly judged difficulty curve, make Hybris brilliantly playable.

Silk Worm

Another ace arcade conversion, Silk Worm is fast, frantic and packed with action. Lovely graphics, challenging gameplay & an awesome two-player co-op mode, put Silk Worm head and shoulders above most late 80s shoot em ups. Superb.

Shadow of the Beast

Fantastic presentation, amazing background graphics, a brilliantly eerie atmosphere & an awesome soundtrack – it’s just a same the game is rather shallow. A decent arcade adventure but not the mega game it was hyped up to be.

Space Harrier

WELCOME TO THE FANTASY ZONE! One of the many great things about the Amiga was not having to compromise when it came to arcade conversions. Amiga Space Harrier is lightning fast, has full-screen scrolling & is near arcade perfect.

Beach Volley

With its tongue firmly in its cheek, Beach Volley is a highly enjoyable sports sim. Amusing cutscenes, cool cartoon sprites, big rockin’ tunes & fun gameplay, make this extremely playable, especially when competing against a mate.

Lombard RAC Rally

This comes at the race game genre from a different angle. Literally. You’re sat in the backseat, controlling the driver! The presentation is excellent, graphics are nice and the movement is fluid. A great rally-themed racer.

E.H. International Soccer

Simply the best C64 footy game ever. Incredibly detailed with a huge range of options & pure brilliant gameplay, EHIS is outstanding. I played this more than all the games on this list combined & I loved every single second

Operation Wolf

Another ace arcade conversion, Operation Wolf is superb. It has great graphics & top tunes, but the all-action gameplay is what makes it – fast, frenetic & packed with excitement & tension. Best played with a mouse, it's a blast.
