My Favourite C64 Software Houses No.49
English Software
Initially focusing on Atari games, English branched out in the mid-80s, releasing the cool & quirky platformers Jet Boot Jack & Henry’s House for the 64. My fave game of theirs is the medieval bash ‘em up Knight Games.
My Fave C64 Arcade Adventures No.4
Samurai Warrior - Usagi Yojimbo
Firebird
1988
This combination of fighting & arcade adventuring is exceptional. Original & engrossing gameplay combined with superb graphics & a cool, zen atmosphere make this one of the C64’s very best games.
My Favourite C64 Arcade Adventures No.6
The Sacred Armour of Antiriad
Palace
1986
Another super-slick piece of software from Palace, Antiriad has gorgeous graphics & brilliant sound, and it’s original, atmospheric and incredibly playable. One of the 64’s most polished games.
My Fave C64 Arcade Adventures No.7
The Great Escape
Ocean
1987
With its sparse black & white graphics, The Great Escape doesn’t look like much, but once you start playing you’re hooked. Innovative & atmospheric, with tense & absorbing gameplay, it’s an absolute belter.
My Favourite C64 Arcade Adventures No.15
Saboteur
Durrell
1986
It may be a straight port from the Speccy original but Saboteur is still an excellent game. A cracking combination of stealth, beat ‘em up & arcade adventure, it’s addictive, exciting and thoroughly engrossing.
My Favourite C64 Arcade Adventures No.23
Equinox
Mikro-Gen
1986
This fast-moving game has elements of a shoot ‘em up but it’s an arcade adventure at heart with puzzles to solve and a large map to explore. Unusual, innovative and lots of fun, Equinox is very playable.
My Favourite C64 Arcade Adventures No.24
Inside Outing
The Edge
1988
Also known as Raffles, Inside Outing is a well-designed isometric arcade adventure with lovely colourful graphics, a sandbox-y environment, good puzzles & absorbing gameplay. An extremely well-crafted game.
My Fave Arcade Adventures No.27
Wizardry
The Edge
1985
While it failed to live up to the pre-release hype, Wizardry is still a decent game. Atmospheric, with nice isometric graphics & ace music, it’s let down by a few bugs & obscure puzzles. Overall, a sound arcade adventure.
My Fave C64 Misc Games No.1
The Adventures of Basildon Bond
Probe
1986
I was worried that the Basildon Bond game wouldn’t meet my expectations but I needn’t have worried. Very funny with brilliant graphics & exciting gameplay, it’s awesome. One of the C64’s greatest games.
My Fave C64 Misc Games No.2
Shoot ‘em up Construction Kit
Outlaw
1987
I dreamed of being a coder as a kid but lacked the skills to make it happen. Enter SEUCK making my dreams come true! I poured months into this & loved every minute. OK, not a game, but a wonderful creation.
