I didn't realize Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth was such an overt homage to Symphony of the Night. I adored that game, so it's cool to see its direct inspiration.
It's been over a week, time to think about how dope Bubblegum Crisis is.
I think it says something that so many Spider-character outfits take heavy inspiration from the classic black suit.
It's weird how anime character design has gotten so flattened in the past decade. There's still a few notable outliers, but it ain't how it used to be. I miss top shows having overtly stylish designs and weird looking characters.
I ended up making this a double feature with The Weathering Continent (1992) (also designed by Mutsumi Inomata). Absolutely captivating animation and music. It has a haunting mood, similar vibes to Vampire Hunter D and a bit of Angel's Egg.
Designs and animation direction are by the great Mutsumi Inomata. If you're never seen her art, it's wonderful stuff. Beautiful but also bittersweet and a bit haunting.
