Concept art drafted in 2008 for Scott Derrickson's unmade film PARADISE LOST. It was based on John Milton's epic 1667 poem (comprising ten thousand lines of blank verse), which traces the Fall of Man and expulsion from Heaven of Lucifer, the angel who became Satan.

The first cinematic adaptation of DRACULA was DRACULA'S DEATH (1921). Directed by Károly Lajthay and produced by Hungary's Corvin Film Studio, no copies of the picture survive. Its existence came to prominence after publicity photos and newspaper reviews were discovered.

"Infinite space. Infinite terror." A cool alternative poster for Paul W. S. Anderson's 1997 science fiction horror film EVENT HORIZON, designed by Evan Ohl.

An exquisite background from Hayao Miyazaki's 2013 animated historical drama THE WIND RISES. Based on Tatsuo Hori's novel THE WIND HAS RISEN, published in the 1930s, it was the highest-grossing film of the year in Japan and was nominated for an Oscar.

A lovely imageboard from Hayao Miyazaki's animated post-apocalyptic fantasy, NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND (1984), based on his own 1982 manga. Though made before Studio Ghibli was founded on June 15, 1985, it's often thought of as a Ghibli film.

The concept art for the tree creature in FROM HELL IT CAME (1957), rendered by visual effects creator Paul Blaisdell, compared with a photo of the finished Tabanga monster suit fabricated later by Don Post Studios. Sadly, Blaisdell was never paid for his design work.

A gorgeous watercolour imageboard from Hayao Miyazaki's masterful animated film PRINCESS MONONOKE (1997). One of my personal favourites of Miyazaki's films.

I made an error yesterday in crediting the design of Meg Mucklebones solely to Rob Bottin. The art isn't by Bottin, but was actually drafted by Miles Teves (his signature is evident in this larger picture here). My thanks to for pointing this out.

A terrific production imageboard for Hayao Miyazaki's exquisite animated fantasy film HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE (2004), based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Diana Wynne Jones.

An imageboard from Hayao Miyazaki's classic animated feature MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO (1988), inarguably one of the greatest family films ever made.
