#133 Enkidu
The earliest literary depiction of the wild man. Possibly originally a bull man, the earliest poems describe him as a slave. Interestingly, he only appears in the context of Gilgamesh, and does not appear on any deity lists. Truly a legendary camaraderie!
#131 Joan of Arc Alter Santa Lily
This unit came into being through the divine powers of Takeuchi, who said to Nasu “what about an Alter Lily” to which Nasu said “you can’t have an Alter Lily!” and Takeuchi said “too late, I already sent her to Delightworks”. Seriously.
#128 Elizabeth Bathory (Brave)
Dragon Quest is one of the most successful video game franchises in Japan so it’s no wonder TM would make a reference to it. Elizabeth’s entire outfit and event is the female Warrior’s outfit from Dragon Quest III released in 1988.
#127 Chloe von Einzbern
Prisma Illya’s author, Hiroshi Hiroyama, got his start drawing fan comics under the name KALMIA. He did several FSN books, one of which had Illya put her consciousness into Heracles. He later caught the eye of TM, who hired him to make his own series.
#126 Illyasviel von Einzbern (Prisma Illya)
A different version of Illya from the original Fate/stay Night, Prisma Illya gets her origins from Magical Ruby in Fate/hollow Ataraxia, where Rin finds Ruby in a chest of magical codes. This premise is later used for Prisma Illya.
#125 St. Martha
The legend of Martha and Tarasque hails from around the 12th century, and can be found in several sources such as the Golden Legend. Some theories believe that Tarasque is from Celtic paganism originally, with Martha supplanting the original hero/heroine.
#134 Kiyohime
Kiyohime’s origins are derived from a Noh play called Dōjōji, featuring the temple of the same name. It is here that Kiyohime traps Anchin and burns him to death in the temple bell. The play is significant because it one of the only to use a major prop—the bell.
….God damn it me could you stop being like this for ONE MINUTE
#133 Scathach
Scathach’s method of launching Gae Bolg with her toes is the actual way you’re supposed to use Gae Bolg in myth. The Book of Leincaster states that it could only be used on a stream and cast from the fork of the toes, explaining Scathach’s summer unit.
#132 Mordred
Prydwen is one of Arthur’s earliest attributed weapons, appearing in the Welsh Preiddeu Annwfn and Culhwch & Olwen as a great ship. Geoffrey of Monmouth later uses the name for Arthur’s shield. Naturally, TM opted for a surfboard as a way of adopting both origins.
