Note how small Lulu’s hands appear in this shot, Pabst’s way of reinforcing the perception of Lulu as a trusting innocent. He also creatively uses lighting and shadow to make her hands appear even smaller and more childlike.

One thing that threw me off was the fact that Anita’s pirate outfit was noticeably similar to outfits worn a few years earlier by other Johnston subjects (and Follies stars) in a series of magazine covers in 1922: Doris Kenyon, Billie Dove, Marie Prevost and Marjorie Daw.
