Successful and prolific Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens was born #OTD in 1577. Did you know that he played an important diplomatic role in 17th-century European politics? A close confident of Queen Isabella of Castille, he negotiated on her behalf in France and England.

Yesterday @Drouot, at a sale by Pierre Bergé & Associés, the Louvre (@MuseeLouvre) preempted two plates of the seventeenth century iron embossed with gold and silver. The works, depicting Henri IV and Marie de Medici, were bought for €10,400 and €4,940 respectively. #preemption

#OTD in 1978, the first Garfield the lazy cat comic strip was published, in 41 publications in the US. Since July 2015 Jim Davis' creation has held the Guinness World Record for the world's most widely syndicated comic strip, with an estimated readership of around 200 million.

Mixing art and science, the exhibition “Unsettled Nature: Artists Reflect on the Age of Humans” was due to open at National Museum of Natural History (@NMNH) in 2020—it instead opens today, June 18th. Its works consider the haunting aesthetics of human impact on the planet.

A work by Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée was preempted by the Château de Fontainebleau (@CFontainebleau). "Présentation du roi de Rome à la ville de Gand"("Presentation of the King of Rome to the City of Ghent”) was preempted for €28,600 at @Aguttes_.
