Young people with aptitude in magic are brought to New Orleans to study the Mystic Arts. Writer Skottie Young, Artist Humberto Ramos, Colorist Edgar Delgado. Young’s delightful dialogue is enhanced by Ramos’ art and Delgado’s lovely watercolors. 4.5/5

New Mutants (2019) #8
A mission to find what is hunting mutants. Writer Ed Brisson, Artist Marco Failla, Colorist Carlos Lopez. I think I understand Brisson’s intent, but I still find the slaughter of even predatory beasts by our supposed virtuous protagonists disturbing. 3/5

X-Men (2019) #7
Scott seeks to understand Crucible. Writer Jonathan Hickman, Artist Leinil Francis Yu, Color Artist Sunny Gho. Hickman tackles a very difficult and delicate subject with a directness and honesty rare in any medium. It’s complimented perfectly by Yu-Gho. 5/5

Birthright #43
A plan is formulated and it’s execution underway. Writer Joshua Williamson, Artist Andrei Bressan, Colorist Adriano Lucas. Williamson is building up the tension with this issue, allowing Bressan-Lucas’ art to really sell the smaller moments. 4/5

Marauders (2019) #8
A rescue and retribution. Writer Gerry Duggan, Artist Stefano Caselli, Colorist Edgar Delgado. A side I thought I’d never see of Iceman and a wow moment between Storm and Frost were the highlights. Caselli-Delgado’s work is continually breathtaking. 4/5

Rat Queens #21
Hannah turns black magic, while the rest of the Rat Queens look into a titan interrupting the peace in Palisade. Writer Ryan Ferrier, Artist Priscilla Petraites, Colorist Marco Lesko. Ferrier-Petraites-Lesko capture all the Queens perfectly in a sweet new arc. 4/5

Captain America (2018) #19
Steve learns of secrets kept. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, Artists Jason Masters, Bob Quinn, & Lucas Werneck, Colorist Matt Milla. A plethora of revelations (almost too many), but a nice tease of events to come. 4/5

The Resistance #2
While governments decide on how to control those with newly found powers, the newly-powered are making decisions of their own. Writer J. Michael Straczynski, Artist Mike Deodato Jr., Colorist Lee Loughridge. A nice balance of personal and political drama. 4/5

Excalibur (2019) #7
Hunting Warwolves. Writer Tini Howard, Penciler Wilton Santos, Inker Oren Junior, Colorist Erick Arciniega. I disliked the premise of this story and even some minor humorous character moments didn’t help disarm it. 2.5/5
