Have posted his superb work before, but couldn’t resist these red brick corkers! 😍
@DalstonScribble Pleased you think so, too Jane, like a lot of his other works, this one, ‘The Gateway, Moss Side, Manchester’ (1967) captures so many layers of a pivotal & increasingly relevant period of social history - he definitely deserves a wider following #HarryKingsley
Harry Kingsley 1914–1998 studied & later lectured at the Manchester School of Art - his still undervalued work features highly significant aspects of rapid post war change around the City including immigration & the desolation of close knit communities by urban clearance projects
Kenneth George Chapman 1908-1993 b. East Ham, London, painter & printmaker, deafness hindered his early education, but he went on to train at the Slade & R.A. A visit to the Rhondda in 1953 began a “love affair” & he became an affectionate chronicler of its landscape & community.
Elwin Hawthorne 1905-1954 b. Poplar and part of the East London Group - grateful to @nicholas_sack for another fine steer - usual, fascinating additional information also available via @thegentleauthor see: https://t.co/XqleYzFGl6 ...
Some book covers by the splendid, John Minton (1917–1957) - the illustrations work even better if you summon up that musty but magnificent book aroma ... if only they did it in an aftershave or perfume #BookSniffer
