Rudolf Jacobi 1899-1972 b. Mühlhausen, Germany, trained at the Royal Academy, Berlin. He & his wife left for New York in 1934 when the art school they founded was closed because they refused to expel Jewish students. They later returned to Germany where Rudolf died in 1972.

M. Edward Griff b. Vienna - mid 20th century artist, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Essentially a modern Impressionist, he travelled widely and is perhaps best known for painting marine and river bank scenes.

Aaron Harry Gorson 1872-1933 b. Kovno, Lithuania, moved to the U.S in 1890, trained at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts & then Paris. Often described as a tonalist, he was a pioneering industrial landscapist with a particular passion for the night time beauty of Pennsylvania.

Fyffe Christie 1918-1979 b. Bushey, Herts., figurative painter, mural artist & teacher, studied at Glasgow School of Art following service in WW2. His oils reflect the influence of Cézanne & Matisse whilst the stylised figures of his murals drew comparisons with Stanley Spencer.

John Uzzell Edwards 1934-2014 b. Deri, Caerphilly, self-taught, he travelled widely in Europe, initially fascinated by South Wales’s industrial landscape he became increasingly influenced by Celtic art & is regarded as one of the most important Welsh artists of the 20th century.

Leighton Hall Woollatt 1905-1974 b. Nottingham, he studied at Nottingham College of Art & the Royal Academy. He was an official war artist during WW2 & much of his work in public collections relates to that period & features damage around Devon where he spent much of his life.

Oscar Verpoorten 1895-1948 b. Antwerp, Flemish painter, engraver & teacher. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, but was largely self-taught as a painter. His subjects included harbour views, marine studies, cityscapes, riverscapes, portraits & still-lifes.

Giovanni Martino 1908-1988 b. Philadelphia, one of eight artistic siblings, he painted various landscapes of industrial scenes around his home city, primarily in Manayunk. From thinly painted scenes of the mill town, he developed toward impasto laden oils during the 1960s.

Yes, Alan - he was well travelled (London scenes, top right & bottom left) so open to a lot of influences e.g. the Jugendstil whilst in Munich. An impressionist at heart, he seems to have always liked a colourful dab or two, but some more muted works below
