Examples of colour tinted drawings for “Coal Face: The Devil in the Smoke.”

For the theme of the story I wanted to concentrate on gritty smoky/diffused light and shadows. So I would draw only in shades of B&W with light/shadows and then later add subtle colour overlays.

Leonard (the cat) seems oddly fascinated by this video on the art of H.R. Giger.

And now I’m wondering if when Leonard turns around to face me he might have transformed into that painting of the Giger Cat!

This week is preparing the final colour tint to various black and white artwork/scenes from “Coal Face” as I hurtle towards the publication date.

The majority of the book is tinted in sepia tones with elements of spot colour.

Walking across misty fields and through sleepy foggy streets earlier this morning I was put in the mood of the BEST musical ever written. Yes - the original 1978 Jeff Wayne’s “The War of the Worlds.”

And also featuring the best album artwork ever created.

It never grows old.

I’ve been drawing for so long in charcoal tones for “Coal Face” that when I looked back on the artwork for my second to last book “Surface Tension” I had forgotten just how colourful it was.
The two books have completely different art styles - watery for ST and earthy for CF.

I’ve been on a bit of a later era Fellini trip these past few weeks (when he left realism for surrealism). Tonight I come to “Fellini’s Cassanova” (1976).
Take a look at the wonderful/varied poster art created for the film’s release. Each country applying their own unique spin.
