Hard not to imagine that Cell’s desire to open a tournament is his Goku cells showing through (thank God he never got Zeno’s ear). But there’s probably some Piccolo in there as well…

After Vegeta and Trunks go into the time chamber to train for a day, the scene jumps to nearly one day later. 16+17+18 arrive at Kame House. Piccolo begins battling 17 on the nearby islands, where 17 shows a noted interest in preserving nature (if only he could get paid for that)

Trunks surmises that Vegeta avoided this powerful-but-slow Super Saiyan form because he recognized its drawbacks. The Super Saiyan guide included in the Trunks TV special animanga likewise notes that Vegeta is apparently capable of this transformation.

As Piccolo and co fruitlessly chase after Cell, the androids reach Goku’s house but find he’s not home. They decide to go see if he’s at Roshi’s instead. We next jump forward to nearly a day after Vegeta+Trunks entered the time chamber (gee whiz, I wonder how this’ll play out?)

(Compare Goku’s early recovery to Vegeta’s surprisingly rapid recovery in the Namek arc, which allows him to catch Zarbon and Appule off-guard)

Trunks initially estimates Goku’s recovery time as roughly 10 days, but in fact the narrator says a total of three days pass, at which point Goku wakes up. Accordingly, the Daizenshuu 7 timeline dates this to May 15th, three days after all the excitement on May 12th.

Based on these blueprints, Bulma and Dr. Briefs begin looking for a weakness in the androids. Meanwhile, Lapis, Lazuli, and Robo Gebo take the scenic route to Goku’s house, as Cell gradually gathers strength by absorbing humans. And thus ends May 12th.

By now it’s the afternoon (per Daizenshuu 7). Cell attacks Ginger Town. Piccolo and Kami merge and somewhat cleverly trick Cell into revealing all. Cell escapes, but Trunks+Kuririn investigate Gero’s lab, where they destroy the present day larval Cell and obtain 17’s blueprints.

Things kick off with 19+20 at 10 AM, Goku gets sick, Vegeta destroys 19, while 20 is revealed as Gero and flees to his lab, where 17+18 kill him and revive 16. Everyone loses. Piccolo flies off to merge with Kami. Trunks/Bulma/Gohan investigate the broken down time machine.

When he first appears, Trunks describes himself as both 17 years old and from 20 years in the future (presumably just rounding down). In the Buu arc, kid Trunks is said to be 8, making him a year older than the 7-year old Goten (possibly rounding up, but more on this later)
