We're starting our first week back to work in style. This illustration from the early Victorian era showing three women chatting appeared in the July 1839 volume of The Lady's Book.

What better way to view A Christmas Carol than through the art of the incomparable Arthur Rackham? This 1915 edition perfectly captures the darker unsettling aspects of the story in the depictions of Ebenezer Scrooge moving through a wintery landscape. #LibraryWonderland
A riot of color characterizes this marbled paper book cover. We love the repetition of the large swirls and the flecks of orange that offset the base colors.

For #FloraFriday we bring you some plates from our favorite book, The #Ferns of Great Britain & Ireland. These life size prints were created using the 18th century nature printing process, which the book author is keen to note is the ONLY accurate type of scientific illustration.
For another #FishyFriday #SciArt feature, these eagle rays appear in the 1843 Naturalist's Library.

We were holding this image for another holiday, but cats win out over Halloween any day. For #NationalCatDay this 1893 image from the NY Condensed Milk Co. shows Eagle Brand evaporated milk spilling out of a platter being tipped by fluffy kittens. Oh, and a girl is there too.
We're #BugginOut over the @iglibraries #WednesdayChallenge and can't feature enough of the beautiful plates found in The Naturalist's Library. Here, the vol. 1 title page features a variety of different #insects. #archives
