Unlike his 2 predecessors, he was born in Great Britain, spoke English as his first language & never visited Hanover, since 1811 his son ruled as Regent.

This week's #WellingtonWednesday is #OnThisDay 7 October 1813, Wellington fought & won the Battle of Bidasoa (or the Battle of Larrun) wresting a foothold on French soil from Marshal Soult's army. This established a postion to invade France following the Battle of The Pyrenees.
The French attack collapsed, fleeing they left General Simon, their commander, wounded & a prisoner.
Another 2 attacks were made, both ran into a close fire from two Allied Artillery batteries along with Portuguese musketry. These unit was also routed.
Fought #OnThisDay 27 Sept 1810 The Battle of Bucasso.
To block Marshal Massena's invasion of Portugal, Wellington chose a very strong position on the heights of Bucasso.
His army consisted of 25,000 British, 25,000 Portuguese & 78 guns, against 60,000 French with 112 guns.

The battle cost the French roughly 1,600 casualties, the British 2,000, the Egyptians 503, and the Russians some 5,000+
A sombre #OnThisDay 14 September 1852, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington passed away at Walmer Castle, he was 83 years old. He had likely suffered a series of strokes overnight & his condition deteriorated. He was moved from his bed to a chair where he expired at 3pm.
