Unfortunately, instances currently have to be realized to apply color to them, so for this level of detail, particles seem to be the better choice for now :P

@Bri_Seven Yes! I'm currently working on a simpler piece which makes heavy use of the two-layer setup :)
Raw pixels and marching cubes;
The aircraft was created using realtime marching cubes preview to exploit the "sharp" diagonals that the marching cube process creates.
Unfortunately, there's not a lot of editors (that I know of!) with realtime postprocessing/filtering.

My #c64 dungeon tileset+sprites, upscaled using two-pass Scale2x I implemented in #Blender3d.
No additional colors are introduced and I kinda like the blobby, rounded look.
