#OnThisDay 1780 Admiral Rodney in HMS SANDWICH defeated a Spanish Fleet off Cape St Vincent, Portugal. After the battle he re-supplied the besieged garrisons at Gibraltar and Minorca. The victory at St Vincent owes much to @RoyalNavy ships speed due to having copper sheath hulls.

#OnThisDay in 1759 Admiral Hawke defeated the French at the Battle of Quiberon Bay during the 7 years war. This action ended French Naval superiority and prevented a planned invasion of the United Kingdom. @RoyalNavy

#OnThisDay 1816 a combined @royalnavy & @kon_marine Fleet under Admiral Edward Pellew & Vice Adm. Theodorus van Capellen, bombarded the African port of Algiers to enforce the abolition of Christian slavery. The ferocious battle was a success freeing 3000 Christian slaves.

#OnThisDay 1588 the Spanish Armada was spotted off #Plymouth The English Fleet under Lord Howard, Sir Francis Drake & Sir John Hawkins, sailed from Plymouth and engaged the Armada the next day starting an epic chase/battle that led to a decisive victory for the English Navy.

#OnThisDay 1694 a fleet of over 200 @RoyalNavy and merchant ships entered the Straits of #Gibraltar under the command of Rear Admiral Francis Wheler in HMS SUSSEX. SUSSEX and 12 other ships were sunk in a storm with only 2 survivors. SUSSEX was carrying over £500Million in gold

#OnThisDay 1779 the great @royalnavy explorer and navigator, Captain James Cook, was killed by natives in Hawaii after an altercation following the theft of one of his ship's boats which escalated causing casualties on both sides.

#OnThisDay 1596 legendary sailor Sir Francis Drake died from yellow fever in W. Indies. Famous as a privateer who rose to Vice Admiral and served in the English Fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada, claimed #California for England and circumnavigated the world.
