An awesome Fantastic 4 concept with Jack Kirby inspired costumes, a nifty redesign for Doom and Diablo, and the introduction of some pretty sweet looking heroes from other nationalities (Seriously, that Mazinger/Kamen Rider hero is *SICK!*)...
It's easy- far too easy- to be cynical and depressing.
But as Spy X Family shows, there can be a lot of material mined in stories about warmth, optimism and love.(5/5)
Regarding the discussion "Why does Manga sell more than US comics," I'm certainly not of the mindset that US comics are "Failing" (They are a billion dollar industry) but I think there is a lesson to be learned from one of the most popular titles at the moment, Spy X Family.(1/5)
So, it's hard not to see the current depiction as a sort of over-correction of that previous status quo to make up for severely lost time.
Which is fine. It's just important to remember she can be more than that.(7/8)
Unfortunately, come the BND era, and the creative direction was to present the cold exterior not as a front, but as a genuine aspect of her personality.
Her bitterness went from being a shield to her just being bitter because that's who she was now.(4/8)
As much as have enjoyed MJ's return to the Spider-Man books in a major way, I think one of the things that has been a detriment to her characterization is that the creative teams seem stuck on depicting her as essentially a "Love martyr," hopelessly devoted to Peter.(1/8)
It's really no surprise that the character has languished ever since the push, with runs by Slott and Cantwell trying to position the character back to a more familiar interpretation, through varying degrees of success. (11/12)
Couple that with the pointless MJ addition to the cast, the terrible Civil War II tie in, and sidelining Tony after not even a year to replace him with Dr. Doom and Riri Williams, and it's baffling how Marvel could see this as a way to turn Iron Man into "The new Spidey."(10/12)
What's more, Marvel tried to ape the personae of RDJ's unforgettable portrayal in the films, but neglected to acknowledge that part of the appeal from that performance was RDJ's ability to convey humility and humanity along with his hubris, along with his infectious charm.(9/12)
