18 Aug 1780 Fishing Creek, SC. Col Banastre Tarleton &350 Loyalists surprise a Patriot force under Gen Thomas Sumter, 40 miles from Camden, killing 150, wounding & capturing 300, & freeing 100 British prisoners. Loyalists lost just 16 killed.

14 Aug 1775 Ft Ticonderoga, NY Maj John Brown returns from a mission to Canada & reports that the French settlers & Indians are neutral & that St Johns has a small garrison of 300 men. Gen Phillip Schuyler judges the province ripe for invasion.

13 Aug 1779 Penobscot, MA. A British fleet, under Sir George Collier, sails into Penobscot Bay but Commodore Dudley Saltonstall flees upriver & burns/scuttles his ships. Over 3 days, the Patriots will lose 43 ships & suffer almost 500 casualties.

12 Aug 1777 General Orders issued by Gen Washington approved 50 lashes for a soldier found drunk on duty. Luckily, he was acquitted of allowing a prisoner to escape. 50 lashes were often a death sentence.

12 Aug 1776 Oconee Co, SC A Patriot expedition under Maj Andrew Williamson defeats a large Cherokee war party near the village of Tamasee. After their victory, the Patriots burned the town.

8 Aug 1775 Cambridge, MA. Daniel Morgan & his Virginia riflemen arrive in hunting shirts & leggings, Morgan's men initially seemed strange to the militia & fights broke out. The riflemen soon gained a fierce reputation however as "Morgan's Sharpshooters.”
