17歳の時に はすでに第2回内国絵画共進会に出品するまでの実力を備えており、その後明治20年代には いくつかの展覧会に出品しその彩色を高く評価されました。

暁翠は暁斎の門人で、その長女にあたります。父に「柿に鳩の図」の手本を与えられ日本画 の手ほどきを受け始めた暁翠は、この手本を生涯大事にしていたといいます。
