Picts painted their bodies with woad. It had medicinal qualities as it numbed pain & congealed blood. So the idea of several hundred naked blue Picts attacking armour wearing Romans isn't mad as it had a psychological impact on the Romans & the Picts could easily run away.

Cistercian houses had a set Plan Dundrennan Abbey (Dumfries & Galloway) HS info board. Newbattle (Dalkeith) my watercolour 1991 & Alan Sorrell's reconstruction of Melrose. For some reason Melrose was a backwards Plan. Even Byland (Sorrell) in England followed the usual site Plan

Was a big fan of in the 1970s. My comic book drawings from 1979 must have subconsciously influenced the Village Gala costumes designs that I made for myself and my Sons in 2011.

Nothing like the smell of fresh bread. In medieval times they cut it length ways with the 'upper crust' going to the well to do Lords & the bottom half used as a plate & given to the poor. That's why rich folks today are called upper crust.

Before working at Tantallon Castle in 1981 and being mad about Castles and medieval armour. I was mad on the TV shows of Doctor Who, Space 1999 and the weekly comic of with Judge Dredd. Some of my comic story drawings from 1979 and Dalek comic idea from 2006.

Bothwell Castle near Glasgow (Scotland) my old watercolour reconstructions & Alan Sorrell's classic reconstruction had the site been completed to original Plan based on design elements from Coucy in France. A stronghold of the Black Douglas family.

In 1378 Ramsay of Dalhousie took South Berwick Castle by surprise with a small force. The English fled & an army of 10,000 was sent to recover Castle. Douglases tried to reach Berwick but were outnumbered. This led to battle of Melrose where English pursuit force was defeated.

In 1306 Comyn was stabbed to death at Greyfriars Church by Robert The Bruce. Kirkpatrick made sure Comyn was dead. Costumes for Comyn, Kirkpatrick & Bruce from Nigel Tranter's 'The Bruce' film project in 1991. Nigel suggested Seton Church as a Greyfriars mock-up for this scene.
