In 1314 Roxburgh Castle captured by surprise by the Black Douglas & slighted by Scots to stop its use as an Auld enemy base. The Black Douglas escorted the Castle Governor to the Border for his own safety as locals wanted to kill him.

Like most Scottish Castles in the mid1800s were seen as ready made quarries and stone work taken to build houses and walls locally. However the stone at Fast was a rather poor quality. There was still alot of the ruin present in the early 1800s.

Great Bascinet & overlap of modern replica. My favourite as its like the bascinet of the Wolf of Badenoch who burnt Elgin Cathedral in 1390 & played chess with the Devil before dying during a thunderstorm at Ruthven Castle (1405).

Rothesay Castle (Scotland). King Robert III died here in 1406 on hearing his Son & Heir James I had been captured by English Pirates off Flambrough Head while fleeing the Bass Rock heading for France. James returned from English captivity in 1424 & punished rebel Scots Lords

As a boy I was amazed at the work of Alan Sorrell. His reconstruction of Dirleton was the first image of its kind I ever saw. So I copied his techinque of boxing views a section at a time. I used (8 pence) Postcard images in 1981 then scaled up to A3 size (Tantallon example)

In 1378 Ramsay of Dalhousie took South Berwick Castle by surprise with a small force. The English fled & an army of 10,000 was sent to recover Castle. Douglases tried to reach Berwick but were out numbered. This led to battle of Melrose where English pursuit force was defeated.

Abercorn Castle image. Nigel Tranter asked if I could do something with Abercorn as there were no floor Plans to work from. He said accounts suggested three towers backed against the Firth of Forth. So came up with a purely speculative view for 1443 & 1455 siege.
