But instead of sharing that horror with children, they did the opposite.
They created innocent, almost frivolous stories that said the world was full of adventure and fun. Courage would be rewarded. The good guys would win.
These stories are not something that a ten year old boy like my son could lose himself in.
They're grim, violent, self-aware, meta operas that endlessly deconstruct what came before.
They're written for cynical, aging people like me.
Compare this to the modern understanding of Superman, who seems to be painfully aware of his status as a super being and weighed down by the world's problems.
Frank Miller even went so far as to ham-fistedly analogize him to the atom bomb. Nice.
The stakes are generally always the same:
- Superman's secret identity is at risk
- Superman's status as Superman is at risk
- Superman's friends are at risk
- A zany villain is executing a heist
- A zany problem for Superman to solve
