Main reason the near plane was so small anyway was to prevent clipping through the wall when the camera is almost parallell with one but it's probably better to just try and push it further out I guess.

So far, so good… From top to bottom:
* raw colours
* normals
* lit smoothly
* lit the same toony way as before
But now the light is calculated in post using the normal buffer instead of per object!
