I loved The Book of Gothel by @MaryMcMyne - an evocative, well researched, beautifully written fairy tale, with a strong heroine and a fascinating interplay of magic, folklore, religion and power. I so enjoyed imagining Haelewise (what a great name!) for these illustrations ❤️

I've just finished The Book of Gothel by @MaryMcMyne - wow! I adore beautiful fairy tale retellings with strong women and this one is a gem. The evocative imagery inspired me to paint a couple of illustrations that I'll share soon. In the meantime, here are the final thumbnails.

Why do we never see older mermaids? Perhaps they're all off being wise somewhere, or perhaps they're just too clever to be seen while collecting shells for their hair...

(Or perhaps we live in an ageist, sexist world that prioritises youth and beauty 🤷‍♀️ )

I've been playing with composition and guides, and with some helpful feedback (thanks all!) have the line art done for my next book cover!

I did spend an hour this morning wandering around my kitchen with my iPad working on the girl's face 😅 so I expect that might change again!
