Death Stranding's landscapes are, like a lot of sci-fi before it, coded as primordial & alien. It follows in the footsteps of films like 2001, Prometheus, Oblivion, Interstellar and even Rogue One. My essay on this topic in the new issue of Heterotopias: https://t.co/h0IX6NM4kx
As well as writing the Gormenghast novels, Mervyn Peake was a very talented book illustrator. The following are from: Bleak House, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and Treasure Island! The Gothic styling really sticks in your mind, Haunting.
The environment/city concepts from The Crossing are incredible. Also, to give proper credit, the 1st time I saw this stuff was in @metallicaisrad's Polygon feature, rather than the new noclip doc. And props to Blake for getting a Viktor Antonov interview! https://t.co/PocSWn2imG
@jaymcastello Thank you Jay! 🤓 Here's another painting... would've posted it, but you know twitter crops make two images side by side look ugly as hell
@richard_littler You might like this one from the sci-fi video game "The Outer Worlds"!
Akiya Kageichi's fantasy illustrations are full of dark mysticism & chaotic symbolism. Reminiscent of Klimt, who was himself inspired by Japanese art, but also--if you're a fan of games--there's similarities with Yoshitaka Amano's work & even the Tarot cards from DA: Inquisition.
2019 has been a fantastic year, maybe the best ever, for games featuring wee neds and scallywags (Cuno from Disco, Khan from Pathologic).
If "Biggest Communism Builder" wasn't the first achievement you unlocked in Disco Elysium, you're a cop.
