Some interesting class dynamics at play in Sekiro, owing to the historical setting. Samurai were feudal Japan's ruling military class & their armour reflects this: pristine, ornate and terrifyingly colourful. In contrast ninjas were lower-class, their attire frayed, shabby, drab.

I cut a paragraph on spotlights for my article, but there's an interesting history there. These modern/industrial lights popped up in New York/Manhattan during the interwar period, and were a symbol of the future city. They're used in Metropolis, Gotham, Rapture & Neo Tokyo.

Some more Erik Desmazières: "Unknown Lands" and "The Deserted Place". He certainly knew how to name things.

@MrEwanMorrison The image is also prevalent in the world of video games. This is the cover art from the latest Zelda! In most cases you are directly inhabiting the character, wandering alone around a vast, open landscape etc.

Hard to know if Hugh Ferriss was directly inspired by Fritz Lang's Metropolis or not, but there's definitely common ancestry. New York City, modernism, gothic. Anyway, watch the film (again).

Since I've been looking at lots of weird and wondrous monumental architecture... @FriendAndFoeDev's VANE comes out next week (PS4), and it looks incredible. Getting all kinds of otherworldly vibes from it: Ico, Journey, INSIDE, Pathologic. One to keep an eye on.

I've seen and even used a lot of bad graphic novels in the past when teaching (Macbeth comes to mind), but this steampunkish adaptation of the Communist Manifesto by cartoonist Martin Rowson looks INCREDIBLE.
